Nervous About a Body Wave Perm? What a Spiral Perm Is Really Like
By Comforte Hair and Nail Salon | August 12, 2026
Short answer: a Spiral Perm reshapes long hair into vertical corkscrew curls. We’ll start with a real consultation and usually a strand test, plan on about 2 to 4 hours, and we’ll send you home with clear aftercare so your curls set up the way they should.
One of our favorite things to hear is when someone says they “always, always walk out that door with the biggest grin”, because that’s exactly how a first spiral perm should end.
If you’re nervous, you’re normal. A perm is a real change, and the unknown part is what makes people hesitate. We’re in Shawnee, right off the Shawnee Mission Parkway corridor near 119th and Quivira, and we do a lot of curl conversations with busy commuters and parents who want curls that don’t require a daily blowout. Below, we’ll walk through how to prep, what happens in the chair, and how to keep your curl pattern looking clean and defined through Kansas humidity.
Prep for a Spiral Perm in Shawnee: 6 things to do before you sit down
The perm itself is only part of it. The best results usually come from a strong consult. We’re detail people, and you’ll feel that right away. Clients tell us we listen and we do exactly what they ask for, and that’s the energy we want for your first perm too.
- Bring 2 to 3 photos of the curl size you actually want. Spiral perm photos can look similar online, but rod size changes everything.
- Tell us your hair history for the last 12 months, especially lightener, highlights, box color, keratin, or smoothing services. This is where we protect the hair.
- Come honest about damage. If ends are fragile, we’ll talk trim first so the curl doesn’t unravel at the bottom.
- Plan your day. Spiral perms on long hair commonly take 2 to 4 hours because wrapping and processing are not fast steps.
- Skip heavy oils and thick masks right before your perm unless we tell you otherwise. Build-up can interfere with even processing.
- Expect a strand test if your hair has a lot going on. It’s our quick reality-check before we commit to full-head rods.
And if you’re driving in from Overland Park, Lenexa, Merriam, Mission, Prairie Village, or Olathe, give yourself a little buffer. A perm appointment is not the one you want to rush.
Your Spiral Perm appointment, step-by-step (and what’s normal to feel)
When you arrive, we start with a conversation, not a sales pitch. We’ll look at your hair density, length, and how it behaves when it air dries. Then we talk about your goal. Do you want a tight spiral, a looser spiral perm on medium hair, or something closer to a body wave perm that gives bend and movement?
1) Consultation and strand check
If your hair is color-treated, highlighted, or you’ve done smoothing before, we may do a strand test. That’s us being careful, not dramatic. People come to us after other places couldn’t hit the goal, like the client who said no one else could achieve the color they wanted until we did baby lights. That same careful approach matters with perms.
2) Rod wrapping (the long part)
Spiral perms get their look from how we wrap the hair around the rod in a spiral pattern. You’ll sit for a bit here. We’ll check in on comfort, get you positioned right, and keep communication open. Our clients regularly mention that we’re personable and professional, and that the salon atmosphere is pleasant. That matters when you’re in the chair for a while.
3) Processing, rinsing, neutralizing, then set
You may notice a classic perm scent. That’s normal. What shouldn’t happen is burning or intense discomfort. Let us know right away if anything feels off so we can adjust. After processing, we rinse thoroughly, neutralize, and gently set the curl. Then we show you what your curl pattern looks like and how to handle it without roughing it up.
Comforte detail we’re proud of: clients mention follow-up, including a text to make sure no adjustments were needed. If your curl is behaving weird in one spot, we want to know while it’s fresh.

The first 72 hours after a ladies perm: what to do so curls stay defined
Right after your perm, your hair can feel a little different. Usually it’s slightly drier at first, and the curl pattern looks more “new” and springy. That’s why aftercare matters.
Our non-negotiables (and why)
- Don’t wash or tightly tie your hair for about 48 to 72 hours. This gives the curl time to set so you don’t get flat spots.
- Sleep on silk or satin, or do a loose pineapple. Tight ponytails can stretch the curl.
- Avoid heat styling for at least 1 to 2 weeks. Let the curl pattern settle before you bring in hot tools.
- Use gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and deep condition regularly. Permed hair loves moisture, especially in Midwest summer air.
If you’re getting your perm during August pool season, try not to schedule it right before a chlorine weekend. Sun, chlorine, and salt can rough up the hair cuticle right when curls are trying to settle.
Kansas humidity tips: keeping a loose spiral perm looking good in Shawnee summers
Shawnee gets hot and humid, and that’s when curls can either look amazing or go a little fuzzy. The good news is you don’t need a 12-step routine.
What we usually recommend
- Use a light leave-in or curl cream on damp hair. Start small. You can always add more.
- Seal with a tiny amount of anti-frizz product if you’re going outside. Humidity swells the hair shaft and that’s what creates frizz.
- Diffuse on low if you need faster dry time, but don’t rough-dry with high heat.
- Refresh day-two curls with water first, then a pea-size amount of product. More product on dry hair often makes curls sticky.
A client who did a smoothing service with us said humidity used to turn their hair into a “rats nest, ” then called the results a “GAME-CHANGER” once they could go outside and it still looked the same. Different service, same lesson: the right plan for humidity makes your hair feel easier.
Spiral perm short hair, Brazilian perm, loose spiral: pick the right curl plan
A quick clarity check, because the words get messy online. A spiral perm is about that vertical curl pattern created by spiral wrapping. A body wave perm is typically looser and more about movement than ringlets. And when people say “Brazilian perm, ” they often mean a smoothing system, not a curl-creating perm.
Spiral perm short hair
Shorter hair can absolutely be permed, but the curl size and shape have less “hang time.” We’ll talk through how tight you want it, and how much volume you’re comfortable with.
Loose spiral perm medium hair
This is the sweet spot for a lot of first-timers. You get definition without it feeling like a full-time curl commitment. Styling is often “scrunch, let dry, go.”
Ladies perm maintenance
Expect to keep up with trims to maintain shape, especially if your ends are dry. We’ll also point you to products that protect curl definition and hair health.
And yes, we do a lot of consults for people who’ve been disappointed elsewhere. That’s why we slow down at the beginning and get clear on your goal first.
Our best first-time spiral perm advice (plus an easy next step on Shawnee Mission Parkway)
Here’s the insider tip most people miss: bring us your honest morning routine. If you’re already spending a long time drying and straightening, a perm plan should make your day easier, not harder. That time-savings theme comes up a lot in our salon, and it’s why so many first-timers turn into regulars.
If you’re near 119th and Quivira, we’re an easy stop along the Shawnee Mission Parkway corridor. If you commute in, ask us about an early-evening or weekend slot so you’re not watching the clock during a 2 to 4 hour appointment.
Ready for a consult?
Call us and tell our front desk it’s your first spiral perm and what you’re aiming for: tight spiral, loose spiral, or body wave perm movement. We’ll make sure you’re booked with enough time, and we’ll talk through any past color or smoothing services before we start.
